Nandi Bear- 1 class (1 hour 30 minutes followed by a debriefing session ) - Year 6. £175.00
An interactive storytelling/performance piece that explores and challenges the children’s prejudices.
"What I witnessed was one of the most dramatic experiences in my twenty two years in education. The children responded just as we had hoped and I was heartened by their ability to question their beliefs and alter them in the face of injustice. The children discovered that they demonstrated prejudice without even knowing it and hopefully they have learnt that they need to be open minded and consider both sides of an issue."
(Gareth Coombes- School Improvement Adviser Newport)
The two storytellers present the pupils with a moral dilemma. The performance forces pupils to confront, examine and resolve their own prejudices. The performance is followed by a discussion which examines
• Bullying
• Racism
• Intolerance
• Any appropriate issue arising out of the performance
This programme has been used successfully as part of schools’ 'Citizenship' curriculum and is currently being used to train teachers in Newport to challenge stereotyping and prejudice.
"An approach like this does bring the unexpected but the teachers of those children found this a most enlightening event and shows that we all have the potential to be victims or perpetrators of prejudice."
(Cllr John Turner Executive Member for Education Torfaen)
